 A farmer's cow and calf

Md Mazharul Abedin

The cow of the farmer is too obedient

It has been feeding him her milk for about ten years.

She never complained

Never protested

Humble she remained

Though sometimes her son, the white calf remained half-fed.

The farmer called the cow’Bhutki’.

The farmer's sons needed money

For higher education.

The farmer's seven bighas of wheat burnt fully

Some people set fire.

The farmer said,” Bhutki, I shall take you to Sombari Hat”.

Bhutki stared at her master.

Tears dropped.

The farmer hid his eyes.

‘Sombari hat’ day came.

Her master said, “Bhutki, get up,”

Obedient as usual she began to walk

Her white son tied far in a poll

Began to cry repeatedly.

Bhutki once looked back while walking behind her master.

The farmer's wife comforted the calf

“Don't cry more my son,I am here with you.
